What the real fruit tells you about the recipes

Supermarket strawberries are nothing like the wild fruit. Large cultivated strawberries descend from a hybrid, Fragaria × ananassa, born in the eighteenth century from a chance cross between a North American strawberry prized for its flavour and a Chilean one prized for its size. Its botanical name refers to the pineapple scent it was said to carry, and the Plougastel peninsula in Brittany turned it into an intensive crop.

Wild strawberry is a different species, Fragaria vesca. Its fruits are small and fragile, and have long been prized for a finer aroma than garden strawberries. When a label mentions wild strawberry, it signals a more concentrated perfume than a cultivated fruit, not a sweeter one.

Cultivated varieties have their own signatures too. Gariguette, bred at the French agricultural research institute INRA in Montfavet in 1976, is one of the names that has travelled from market stalls to e-liquid labels. A recipe that names a variety is aiming at one specific fruit rather than a generic strawberry.

Reading a strawberry e liquid label in the UK

Four details on the bottle are enough to place it in the grid, without opening it.

The second fruit. It steers the profile towards mellow, sharp or exotic, as the grid shows.
Words such as fresh, iced, ice or freeze. They point to an added cooling agent. Their absence proves nothing on its own, only the maker’s description settles it.
The format. In the UK, e-liquid containing nicotine is sold in refill bottles of no more than 10 ml, at no more than 20 mg/ml. Larger strawberry bottles are therefore nicotine-free shortfills, with room left for a nicotine shot.
